The Matthews' home in the Alberta City neighborhood of Tuscaloosa was destroyed in the April 27, 2011 tornado. Karter sustained facial injuries in the storm and his mother was hospitalized with a broken foot. Their father Keith Matthews is taking care of them while they stay at the shelter.
